Be liver smart project - Curing Hep C

Be liver smart project - Curing Hep C

Hosted by Hepatitis Queensland

Hepatitis Queensland is operating a "Be Liver Smart" project which aims to bring together health services, local hospitals and community organisations to strengthen systems for hepatitis C elimination.

New generation antiviral medications are available on the PBS to treat and cure chronic hepatitis C, these medications are over 95 per cent effective and have very few side effects compared to older medications.

In the Brisbane North region, only 16.2% of the estimated 8,743 people living with hepatitis C have been treated. These patients may not be coming forward for a number of reasons including being diagnosed decades ago, not prioritising their own health care or treatment and/or misinformation regarding the effects of the old treatments. The new treatments are easy, tablets taken daily with minimal side effects.

The workshop will cover topics on how to get patients on treatment, what treatment involves, case studies and how to be part of the be Liver Smart project.
